Key Stage One

Classes are based in spacious, colourful classrooms. Our intention in Key Stage One is to provide a secure and happy environment where all of our pupils' needs, emotional, social and academic, are catered.

Pupils in Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2) follow an International British Programme, designed to deliver the British system core subjects to our pupils for whom English is a second language. Teaching and learning is planned according to the National Curriculum for England and is supported by a range of high-quality books and resources ordered from the UK (Cambridge Set of books). They develop their speaking, listening, writing and reading skills by following the UK Literacy Framework. They also follow the Mathematics Framework and use British Science schemes. Global Perspectives; History, Geography and cross-curricular topics which foster knowledge and understanding of the world are all brought alive through practical hands-on experience and regular field trips.

In addition to Literacy, Mathematics and Science, the pupils follow courses in ICT, French, German, Arabic, Religion, PE, Art and Leader in Me. The Leader in Me helps boost youth leadership development with proven teaching methods, classroom techniques, and Social-Emotional Learning systems. They are also given a chance to Excel in the English language through a special theme in English, where pupils are given listening, fluency, reading and literature sessions once every week.

During Key Stage One, pupils learn to speak clearly, thinking about the needs of their listeners. Also, they learn to read confidently and independently.

At the end of Year 2, pupils are generally assessed as part of the British national programme of assessment, known as SATs. These assessments, carried out by the homeroom teacher, cover English and Mathematics.
